New Academy

A new athletics’ academy for youngsters aged from eight to 12 is being set-up in Hethersett following the success of a social running group.

Qualified coach Ron Marsh, who lives at Quidenham, is looking to set-up the new academy to complement one already in existence in East Harling.

“After starting an academy in Harlling I wanted to continue with the idea and Hethersett seemed the ideal place because of its community spirit and the success of the social running club,” he said.

The social running club began as a partnership between Active Norfolk and Hethersett and the Meltons’ Sports Association in April with Ron as one of the coaches. It has recently been named Run England Eastern Region Club of the Year.

It is likely that the academy will meet weekly at a time and day still to be set.

“We have too many youngsters aged between eight and 12 who take up athletics for a short time and then stop because they have to travel too far and there is nothing for them locally. I am looking at youngsters of all abilities. My target will be to improve them. Although it’s aimed mainly at 8 to 12 year olds I won’t be turning anybody away, particularly if parents want to join in,” Ron added.

The academy will concentrate on the letters A to D – Ability, Balance, Co-Ordination and Discipline and last for a maximum of one and a half hours.

Anybody interested in joining the academy or finding out more about it can contact Ron Marsh on 01953 888817 or e-mail him at
