Association Meeting Reports
November 2011 Hethersett and the Meltons Sports
Association celebrated a year of success at its latest meeting. The association was founded in February to
celebrate sporting success and support improved facilities for fitness,
leisure, sport and well being in Hethersett, Great Melton and Little Melton.
The latest meeting heard of a hectic year for clubs and individuals with
Hethersett and Tas Valley Cricket Club gaining the national Clubmark award and
Hethersett Olympic Weekend proving another massive success with three days of
events including a well supported village fun run and a sport in the park
event which had featured over 20 come and try events. Hethersett Hawks Cycle Speedway Club had
hosted British Championships on the Memorial Playing Field, an Open Spaces
Group had been launched to look into the best use of green spaces in
Hethersett, new play equipment had been put in place on Hethersett Memorial
Playing Field, Hethersett had won the South Norfolk Village Games and finished
second in the Norfolk County Village Games and the Memorial Playing Field
Bowls Club and Great Melton Cricket Club had both gained promotion. The meeting heard that 2012 promises to be
an even busier year following on from Hethersett’s triumph in being named
Norfolk Sports Village of the Year and Norfolk Sports Champion of Champions in
the competition organised jointly by the Eastern Daily Press Newspaper and
Active Norfolk. January will see a special pledge pod
visiting Woodside Nursery and Infants School to allow local people to pledge
towards fitness in 2012. March will see the inaugural Hethersett 30/60 cycling
event starting and finishing in the village. The end of May will see a come
and try it sports event on the Memorial Field, featuring a number of
activities. Next year’s Open Weekend will take place from June 22nd
to 24th and will again feature a village fun run, major ladies five
a side football tournament, a swimming marathon and a come and try event
featuring even more sports. The year will also see international cycle
speedway matches in Hethersett between Great Britain and Poland. July will see the official London 2012
Olympic Torch making a special off route visit to the village to mark
Hethersett’s outstanding achievements in support of the Games over the past
two years. This follows on from the visit this year of the 1948 London Olympic
Torch. Hethersett and the Meltons Sports
Association is looking for new members and welcomes anybody, either individual
or club, interested in sport, fitness, well being and improving the
environment. The next meeting will take place in February. More information is
available from association chairman Peter Steward on 01603 811052.
