Caribou by Bea Ewart 24th September 2006 The Newfoundlanders' Memorial, The Somme, France.
Today sheep graze in a quiet, shady wood, safe from the mines close by that lie in deadly waiting, hidden beneath soft, green turf, behind an electric fence.
Above them, the caribou's call is heard by those who lie across the pitted field, yards from the trench that sheltered them until the whistle blew, calling them to their fate.
