Best Season Celebrated

Club chairman Tony Smith with player of the year Nick Burrett

Hethersett and Tas Valley Cricket Club reflected on its most successful season ever at a special presentation and fireworks evening at its Flordon Headquarters.

Chairman Tony Smith reminisced on previous seasons including winning the Norfolk League Division One title and gaining promotion to the Norfolk Alliance but concluded that 2010 had topped the lot:

“Getting into the Norfolk Alliance was a landmark for the club but this season has bettered even that with the first team winning Division Three and being promoted to Division Two. We also won the Wensum Midweek Cup,” he said adding that the only disappointment was the second team being denied promotion after finishing runners-up in Division Five due to Fakenham being relegated from the East Anglian League.

“That took some of the gloss off the season but I’m sure we will be strong enough to win Division Five next season,” he said.

The Third team failed to scale the heights of the firsts and seconds but avoided relegation from their Norfolk League division with a win on the last day of the season. Mr Smith also praised the efforts of the club in narrowly losing to a very strong North Runcton side in the Carter Cup and reaching the finals of the Lady Mary Trophy after fine wins against Beccles and Dereham in the semi-finals. The club had started their season of success by winning an ice cricket tournament in Estonia.

The chairman paid tribute to the efforts of the youth team players and the support they received from parents and also all the hard work put in behind the scenes to make Hethersett and Tas Valley such a successful club where the emphasis was always on friendship and families.

The player of the season award went to first team captain Nick Burrett who had taken over at the helm after injury to Matt Ellis. He scored over 1,340 runs in competitions, excluding 20 over games and this also gave him the batsman of the year award. Burrett also won the overall catching cup with 29 dismissals. The bowler of the year award went to Julian Emeny for his 49 wickets at an average of 23. The best performance of the year went to Jack Smith for an unbeaten 69 against Dereham on a very difficult batting strip.
