Hethersett's Olympic Bid Hethersett Parish Councillor Shane Hull writes about efforts to make our village part of the torch relay
On 27th January, 2010, Shane Hull (Hethersett Parish Councillor) and Fiona Whiting (Extended Schools Co-ordinator) attended one of a series of briefings by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) in Colchester. The briefings are to outline the preliminary plans for the Olympic and Paralympic Torch Relays to be held in the run up to the Games in July 2012. LOCOG will be producing a press release with further details once all the private Regional briefings have been completed towards the end of February. It is the wish of Hethersett Parish Council that the route of the Olympic Torch includes Hethersett during its journey across the UK and lobbying will continue right up until the final decision is taken by LOCOG later this year. At the briefing in Colchester, copies of the "Book of Hethersett" were presented to Martin Green, (Head of Ceremonies 2012) and to Deborah Hale (Producer, Torch Relays) together with letters of support from Head Teachers of the village schools. In addition, local school children have produced some excellent work around the theme of the Olympic Torch which is on show at Hethersett Library. The key to successfully securing the Olympic Flame for Hethersett is to keep the village in focus and highlight "good news" stories about the youth and people in the Community. To this end, please contact Shane Hull on 07879 628943 or sh@howards.co.uk for any of the following reasons: · To volunteer to join a Working Group to discuss how Hethersett can get ready for the Olympic Celebrations in 2012. · To flag up good news stories involving Hethersett and/or its residents. · To suggest an Olympic Themed event (sporting or cultural) to be held this year in the village over the weekend of 23-25 July. ·
To offer your support in any way, shape or form for our bid to
bring the Olympic Flame to
Hethersett. There is a Facebook group: "Back the Hethersett Bid for the Olympic Flame." Please join the group and add your messages of support! More articles will be posted throughout the year - watch this space! The photograph at the top of the page shows left to right Shane Hull, Martin Green, Deborah Hale and Fiona Whiting.
