Hethersett Olympic 2012 The following article has been submitted for inclusion in the April edition of the village's Good News magazine: A weekend of cultural, fun and sporting events is being organised in Hethersett for July as part of the build-up to the London 2012 Olympic Games. The events will also be part of the village’s attempts to bring the Olympic torch to Hethersett. A special Hethersett Olympic Committee has been formed to oversee the organisation of the weekend which will include local schools, sports clubs and other organisations. The events will run from Friday 23rd July to Sunday 25th July. At their inaugural meeting the Olympic Committee agreed on a Hethersett’s Got Talent event at the Village Hall on the Friday evening, followed by a sport in the park event on the Memorial Playing Field on the Saturday. Also on the Saturday it is hoped to organise a “run the square” event where the public will be given the chance to run/jog or walk the boundaries of the old village. It is also hoped to organise a barbecue. Sunday will see a ladies and girls five-a-side tournament organised on the Memorial Playing Field by Hethersett Athletic FC and hopefully a united service, probably in St Remigius Church. The events are in their early stages of organisation and the committee will be meeting regularly in the build-up period. The weekend will co-incide with a London 2012 Open Weekend. Events will be held throughout the country and in Hethersett it is hoped to repeat and expand on the event in 2011, culminating in celebrations to mark the Olympic Games in 2012. The village has also made an official approach to have the Olympic Torch paraded through Hethersett on its way to London. Local schools will also be encouraged to enjoy Olympic themed activities and a competition is being held to design an Olympic logo for the village. We will keep you informed of developments both with the weekend and the torch application. Updates will be available shortly on the Hethersett village web site at www.hethersett.org.uk/olympic.htm
