Hethersett
- The Big Society - Hethersett's
Big Society aspirations have seen numerous village groups
combine over the past year to improve fitness, well being and
the environment. The Big Society concept has been made possible
through the selfless actions of numerous local people and groups
who give their time and energy willingly to make our village one
of the best in the country. In a new section on this web site we
highlight some of the ideas and ways in which people are working
together to create Hethersett - The Big Society. Visit this
section by clicking here.

Phil and
Heather to Leave Post Office -
After almost 16 years running Hethersett Post Office, Phil and
Heather Emery will be leaving this month. The couple took over
following the retirement of Heather's parents Shirley and Peter
Keeley who ran the post office for 24 years. The new
subpostmaster will be Kevin Salmon who will run the office with
his daughter April. Phil and Heather will not be leaving the
village, however. "We have made a lot of friends over the
years. We can't possibly thank everyone or say goodbye
individually so a great big thank you to everyone who has
entered the Post Office, daily, weekly, monthly or just once a
year to tax your car. Your support has kept the office going and
we are sure you will continue to support Kevin and April,"
Phil and Heather write in the latest edition of Hethersett Good
News magazine.

Youth
Club Appeal - Hethersett
Jubilee Youth Club is appealing for help in three different
directions. The club is currently short of volunteers to join
its rota on Wednesday evenings. With two groups running each
week the club is looking for helpers who can spare two hours
every six weeks to help with activities and the sale of tuck
from 6 to 8 p.m and 7 to 9 p.m. The club is also looking for
people to join its committee which oversees the club and the
management of the hall in Back Lane. Finally the club is looking
for some DIY help to finish off the painting of and improvements
to the hall. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact
Gillian Sanders on 01953 607566
Anniversary
Service - Hethersett
Parish Church will be turning back the clock to celebrate the
350th anniversary of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. The first
Church of England Prayer Book to be written in English was in
1549. Between then and 1662 five different prayer books were
produced before the 1662 book was formally adopted. Since then
there have been a variety of revisions in the 20th century. On Sunday
February 19th at the 10.30 a.m service in St Remigius, the
1662 Book of Common Prayer will be used for worship and prayer.
Toads
Crossing - The mild
winter has brought about the likelihood of an early migration of
the local Toad population. Last year people from Hethersett and
the Meltons saved over 2,000 toads by seeing them across busy
roads in Little and Great Melton. Last year was a bad one for
Toads with the harsh winter being followed by a dry
spring. This year the migration is likely to start earlier than
usual and probably this month. If you want to help this year,
there will be a meeting in Little Melton Village Inn on February
6th to prepare for this year's migration which is likely to
go on until April
Crazy
Quiz - A Crazy Quiz Night
is being held at Hethersett Old Hall School on Saturday 18th
February from 7 p.m in support of the Wulugu Project which

sale and from donations and this will go towards equipping a new
primary school at Gbenfu. Tickets for the quiz cost £12 which

the village’s health and well being. The group will work
closely with the Hethersett Environmental Action Team (HEAT) to
tackle numerous issues including footpaths, community ownership
and the setting up of allotments. The parish pit area, the
central pasture between Henstead and Queen’s Road and the
Village Hall Field are just three of the spaces that will be
investigated. The group will also explore support available from
the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England and other
similar bodies.
Anyone interested in joining the steering group can contact
chair and parish councillor Simon Floyd on 07896 781574 or via

Vote
for Hethersett - Hethersett
residents are being urged to vote for Hethersett when they go
shopping. Waitrose of Eaton has chosen the village’s Olympic
Committee as one of its three charities for February. Customers
using the store throughout the month will be given a token to
place in one of three boxes with £1,000 being distributed
according to the number of tokens received. The more tokens the
Hethersett scheme gets the larger the donation will be.
Hethersett’s Olympic Committee, which comes under the auspices
of Hethersett Parish Council, is responsible for organising a
weekend of events in support of this year’s London Olympic
Games. Over the past two years the village has organised more
events per head of the population than any other village, town
or city in the country. This year’s Open Hethersett event will
take place from Friday June 22nd to Sunday June 24th.
Events this year are likely to include a swimming marathon, the
third Hethersett’s Got Talent competition, a come and try
sports event on the Memorial Playing Field, a church service,
round the square two mile fun run and a major ladies five-a-side
football competition. To read more on this click
