Megan Wins Environmental Award
The generosity of leading Hethersett environmentalist George Beckwith has made it possible for a new competition to be held in the village.
Mr Beckwith, who died in 2009, was a former chairman of Hethersett Parish Council and leading member of the Hethersett Environmental Action Team (HEAT). In his will he left funds for an annual award to be held for the next 10 years in his memory and focussing on improving the environment.
First winner is Hethersett High School pupil Megan Edwards who put together an environmental study of the school, focussing on energy conservation.
The award was launched under the auspices of the Hethersett Society and this year was judged by society member Hugh Redington. Heather Williamson, who worked closely with Mr Beckford on a number of community-based environmental projects and who is a leading member of both the parish council and HEAT, visited the high school at the end of term to present Megan with the George Beckford Environmental Shield and a book token.
It is hoped in 2011 to attract entries from a wider group of people in the village from all age groups.
