Another Milestone for Hethersett

A milestone lost for 25 years has been restored to its former glory and placed on the B1172 at Hethersett.

Norfolk milestone enthusiast and historian Nigel Ford found half of the milestone by the swimming pool in the garden of Wychwood House in Norwich Road. Some local detective work found the other half nearby behind a hedge at East Lodge.

The two halves had to be joined with resin bonding and then repainted to restore the milestone to its former glory. Nigel soon realised that two separate people had carved the stone due to a flat figure four on the Norwich side and a different style 25 on the Thetford side.

The refurbishment work has been paid for by Hethersett Parish Council, owner of Wychwood House Charles Watts and the Milestone Society. It will be featured in a book “60 Norfolk Milestones” due out later this year. A copy of this will be presented to the Queen.
