Norfolk League Division One - May 3rd away to Beccles Seconds Summertime
and the livin’ is easy could be the first line of an appropriate song
for Hethersett and Tas Valley as they ripped Beccles apart in their
opening game in the top division of the Norfolk League. Hethersett
won by 103 runs at a canter against opponents who were relegated from the
Norfolk Alliance last season. Moving into
unknown territory, Hethersett were soon amongst the runs after being put
into bat by the home side. The new
opening partnership of Richard Ellis and Carl Puttock opened brightly,
hitting 13 fours between them but both falling just short of what would
have been deserved half centuries. Ellis (45) and Puttock (48) had laid
the foundations for a Hethersett onslaught with Matt Ellis slamming 76, an
innings that included eight fours and two sixes. Simon
Redhead (46 not out) and Nick Burrett (29 not out) continued to turn the
screw as Hethersett reached 304-3 from 45 overs at over a run a ball. Spin demon
Assad Abbas was the bowling star as Beccles struggled to a total of 201
all out with none of the home batsmen looking likely to stop the
Hethersett juggernaut. Abbas finished with 4-36 as he bamboozled the
opposition into submission. There were two wickets for Tim Shelley and one
each for the two Matts – Ellis and Steward. The Thirds
lost to Blundeston by 34 runs in Division 10. Blundeston scored 181-9 with
Dale Clarke taking 3-26. In reply, Hethersett were all out for 147 with
Alex Reeder top scoring at number nine with an unbeaten 38. Hethersett and Tas Valley beat Beccles by 103 runs in the
