Visiting Tyne Cot by Bea Ewart The Ypres Salient, 23rd September, 2006
There we were, a coach load of tourists, emptying out into a land once scarified by war: that day, headstones in sunlit rows, flowers - roses mostly, memorial bunkers the cross of sacrifice - and the silence; the names of those who loved, and left their loved ones desolate inscribed on a salient of stone.
High up on one wall a single poppy, fixed with a blob of Blu-Tack.
